How to plan a surprise wedding
If you want your wedding to be unforgettable, what could be more exciting than a surprise wedding? I’ve had the pleasure of planning a few Sea to Sky surprise weddings. Below, I’ll recap some surprise nuptials I’ve done, and share five steps to plan your own surprise elopement!
Why have a surprise wedding?
First, let’s talk about why you might choose such a bold and unique way to get married!
Recently, one of my couples decided to skip the fuss of a big wedding, as to them, the marriage was more exciting than the lavish wedding. After several years of loving each other, they just couldn’t imagine entering the new year without being legally wed. So, they planned a surprise ceremony over a few months, revealing the news to their closest people as they arrived for a dinner party!
Another bride, Kiyah, surprised her groom, Donovan, with a legal ceremony in BC before their international destination wedding, solving the logistical challenges of getting married abroad while adding a magical twist to their story.
Whatever the reason, as long as it’s what YOU TWO want, why the heck not?!
About Kiyah and Donovan’s surprise wedding!
When you hear of surprise weddings - it’s usually the guests that are being surprised! At Kiyah and Donovan’s ceremony, it was the GROOM who was unsuspecting! It all started when I met the bride-to-be, Kiyah, at another wedding - we were both vendors! I was the planner, and she was on the catering team. Our dinner breaks lined up, and we bonded instantly over our shared Australian roots.
Between bites, Kiyah told me her love story 🥹 and asked me, ‘Do you know how to get legally married here? I need to figure that out’ and I couldn’t help but chuckle before replying ‘Not only do I know how to get married here, I will marry you!’ before revealing that I’m actually an officiant, too! (She asked the right person, hey)!
Kiyah’s playful spirit and her deep love for Donovan were evident as she spoke. When she mentioned she thinking of surprising him, I squealed with excitement and immediately said I was all in! Her birthday was just two weeks away, and with family visiting from Australia, it was the perfect opportunity to plan a surprise elopement in BC. Since Donovan’s boat played a key role in their love story, she decided to use it as part of her plan. She told him that for her birthday, she wanted to take her family out on the boat, to Green Lake in Whistler.
Behind the scenes, Kiyah secretly obtained the marriage licence - more on that later! Days after, while working at a Whistler hotel, she struck up a conversation with a hotel guest. Turns out, that very guest was the delightful Pkay, a wedding photographer visiting from the UK. And, just like that, a photographer was found! Talk about a stroke of luck / right place, right time!
The Big Day
On her birthday, (aka, secret wedding day) Donovan wrote in her card, ‘I can’t wait to marry you,’ not realizing his wish would come true that very day. They were getting ready to go on the boat while Kiyah and I secretly texted. At the dock, I waited out of sight while they launched into the lake. Once they were on the water, I set up the ceremony space with the help of PKay. Kiyah’s friends arrived, along with one of Donovan’s friends - who had no idea he was about to attend a wedding!
When everything was ready, I messaged Kiyah that we were good to go! She casually told Donovan they’d go grab a friend from the dock. As they floated toward the ceremony, Donovan’s realization was priceless! He jokingly steered the boat around before heading back to shore, where he noticed he wasn’t exactly dressed for the occasion. But, of course Kiyah had planned for that too - she’d packed a change of clothes in a backpack for me to grab earlier. His smile said it all, and they were both BEAMING with joy!
The ceremony unfolded perfectly. Donovan’s joy was undeniable, and Kiyah had pulled off a surprise wedding for the ages. It was an honor to be part of their unforgettable day - a true celebration of love, creativity, and a little bit of magic. Watch this reel to see more from their day!
But… Can you get a marriage licence without your partner knowing?
Yes! In British Columbia, you can obtain a marriage licence without both parties being present. BUT, there is a catch - the person who goes to get the licence must have primary ID for the other partner. So, when Kiyah decided to surprise her love, she grabbed his passport and headed on down to her local marriage licence issuer.
Hint: Passports are not on the list of primary ID on the government website, so we called ahead to ensure they’d accept it before going. Make sure the ID you can access is on the list, and if you’re unsure, call ahead!
Five steps to plan your surprise wedding ceremony
Talk about it: Have an open conversation with your fiancé to ensure a surprise wedding feels right for both of you - and any guests. If there’s someone who might feel hurt by being left out of the planning process, consider cluing them in ahead of time. Ultimately, though, it’s your day, so do what feels best for you!
Decide the location: Choose a venue where you can naturally bring your guests without raising suspicion. Think of a spot that aligns with your decoy story and can accommodate the big reveal seamlessly. Maybe it’s your personal residence, perhaps an actual venue, or the great outdoors provides ample opportunity!
Secure your vendors: Lock in vendors who are reliable and understand the secretive nature of your event. Need recommendations? Shoot me an email, and I’ll share my favorite Sea to Sky wedding vendors.
Set the decoy: Create a believable reason for gathering your guests. Kiyah used her birthday celebration as the cover story, while another couple disguised their ceremony as a “Christmas Happy Hour.” To add a fun touch, they gifted each other a professional photographer for the event, ensuring guests knew to be photo-ready!
Rehearse the surprise: Think through how you want the surprise to unfold and rehearse the timing. Whether it’s a simple announcement or a dramatic reveal, make sure everyone involved knows their role for the big moment.

The reveal moment is full of joy and laughter! You can keep it simple by wearing wedding attire and waiting to see when they clue on - or yell “Surprise!” - or make a grand entrance in your wedding clothes! Include it as part of a toast that twists to announce the wedding, or get a special someone (maybe your kid, or even a pet) to be apart of the guise! Send me an email if you want to chat about ideas.

In BC, you’ll need to get your marriage licence from a local issuer. Then, your wedding officiant will take care of the rest! Make sure to chat to them about it ahead of time.
